Buying Near Saltaire, Shipley or Apperley Bridge Station

buying a house near Apperley Bridge station

For a lot of the buyers we meet, the first question is not which village they like best but how quickly they can get to work. Our patch has three railway stations within a few miles of each other, at Saltaire, Shipley and Apperley Bridge, and together they put Leeds and Bradford within easy reach of almost every street we cover.

Each station serves a slightly different set of neighbourhoods, and the price of homes around them varies more than you might think. Buying near Apperley Bridge station, for example, opens up Greengates, Idle and Thackley as well as Apperley Bridge itself, while Saltaire and Shipley stations serve the streets around the World Heritage Site and the town centre.

This guide compares Land Registry sold prices around each station, so you can see where your budget fits before you start booking viewings. Each section links to our more detailed area guides if you want to find out what everyday life is like.

Three stations, one short stretch of line

Saltaire, Shipley and Apperley Bridge all sit on the lines running between Leeds, Bradford Forster Square and the Aire and Wharfe valleys. Shipley is the busiest of the three, with trains towards Leeds, Bradford, Ilkley, Keighley and Skipton, which makes it a flexible choice if your work takes you in more than one direction.

Saltaire station sits right in the heart of the village, a short walk from Victoria Road and Salts Mill. Apperley Bridge station, on the eastern side of the patch, was opened in 2015 and quickly became popular with buyers in Idle, Thackley and Greengates, who had previously needed to drive or catch a bus to get a train into Leeds.

Because the three stations are so close together, many buyers widen their search to cover all of them. Doing that can be the difference between stretching for a small home in one postcode and comfortably affording a larger one a mile or two away.

Larger semis and detached homes around Nab Wood and Moorhead push the average up.

If Saltaire is on your list, our Living in Saltaire area guide explains what it is like to own a home in a conservation area and World Heritage Site, which is worth understanding before you buy.

Around Shipley station

The BD18 3 sector, covering Shipley town centre and the streets between Kirkgate and the canal, recorded 65 sales in the same period at an average of £209,248. Seven in ten sold for between £120,000 and £275,000, making this one of the more affordable ways to live within walking distance of a station.

Apartments in converted buildings and newer blocks near the station and Victoria Road have sold from under £100,000 up to around £165,000, which is why so many first-time buyers start here. Three and four bedroom terraces on streets such as Leyburn Grove, Marlborough Road and Birklands Road have sold for between £215,000 and £290,000.

Our Living in Shipley area guide covers the town in more detail, and our first-time buyer’s guide to the Saltaire and Shipley area is a good place to start if this will be your first purchase.

Choosing the right station for you

If your priority is the lowest price near a station, Idle, Thorpe Edge and Shipley town centre are the obvious places to start. If you want a character home and are happy to pay a premium, Saltaire village is hard to beat. For family homes with gardens and a quick route into Leeds, the streets around Apperley Bridge, Greengates and Thackley offer a good balance.

It is also worth thinking about the walk or cycle to the station, parking if you plan to drive there, and how often trains run at the times you travel. Two homes at the same price can feel very different once you factor in a daily commute.

Whatever you decide, check recent sold prices on the specific street as well as the wider averages in this guide. Prices can change noticeably from one road to the next, particularly around Saltaire and Nab Wood.
