Your ultimate guide to student housing in Winchester

Winchester test1

Best known for its cathedral and some striking Georgian architecture that wouldn’t be out of place in a Jane Austen novel, Winchester’s university also has some varied and notable alumni. Journalist Martin Bashir, best known for his Princess Diana interview, and sports presenter Mike Bushell were both undergraduates, while Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan also studied at Winchester.

Although established in 2005, having been King Alfred’s College since 1928, the university can trace its history back to 1840. Since then, the university has gone from strength to strength – even boasting a £3.5million sports stadium with an Olympic-standard running track. Throw into the mix a superb nightlife and some excellent student accommodation and it’s no wonder almost 8,000 students flock to Winchester at any one time. This guide will take you through everything you need to know about Winchester student properties, as well as highlighting some of the best places to live.

The best areas to live as a Winchester student

Close to campus

The main University of Winchester campus is on Sparkford Road in the city and much of the managed and privately rented student accommodation is close by.

Student housing on and around Sparkford Road generally comprises purpose-built developments ranging in price from £100 to as much as £300 per room, per week. Some of those higher-end rooms include linen, cleaning services, a gym membership and even a warm croissant in the morning.

Martin & Co exclusively manages West Hill House that is a 3 minute walk away from campus. It comprises 26 en-suite bedrooms, communal areas with TV's, outside table tennis and BBQ area. West Hill House has a student hall of residence feel, is really close to everything and even has free laundry facilities included. Prices from £170 - £190 per room per week.

Stanmore

The majority of privately-rented student housing in Winchester is in Stanmore, a former council estate now privately owned.

Close to Sparkford Road, Stanmore is perfectly placed for access to the main campus and the city itself, with around 20% of properties in the area being student rentals.

Prices in Stanmore range from £100 per week to smarter, more modern shared properties with all bills included at between £125 and £130 per week.

Winnall

North of the city centre, Winnall offers students the same kind of Winchester student homes as Stanmore, with many three bedroom, multiple reception room properties having been developed into four or five-bedroom shared properties for students.

Winnall is close to the M3 motorway, meaning it appeals to students who need road access to return home regularly.

Hyde and Fulflood

Dotted around the city in places like Fulflood and Hyde are pockets of Victorian terraces that have been turned into nice Winchester student properties.

Close to both the university and Winchester station, these properties suit students who want to be close to campus but also enjoy venturing out to Southampton for its nightlife.

Badger Farm

A more modern, 1980s housing estate south of Stanmore, Badger Farm offers a fair number of Winchester student houses to rent.

Bus services into the city and to the campus are very good, so the area remains popular with students who don’t mind being slightly further away from the action.

Winchester student houses for rent

Demand for student housing in Winchester is on a par with supply – but popular properties and purpose-built blocks mean you need to move quickly to secure the student let you want.

With the university supplying around 1,800 rooms and a small percentage of students commuting, the rest of the university’s 8,000-strong student population is in private rented accommodation.

So, it does pay to do your research and move quickly when searching for Winchester student houses to rent.

However, there are some great properties available right now.
