Comparing the cathedral cities of Winchester, Canterbury and York using Zoopla property values data, has Winchester very much at the top of the values tree.

Zoopla's index shows house prices in Winchester at the close of 2013 are on average £435,044. This is substantially higher than Canterbury at £267,084 and York at £237,961.

As you would expect, the average rents for these cathedral cities follow the same ranking, with Winchester top, commanding £1,454 per month average, followed by Canterbury at £1,225. York's average rent stands at £978 per month.

The available stock of rental properties in these towns is a different story. Winchester desperately needs more good quality rented accomodation to meet demand. Zoopla data shows just 191 properties available to rent in Winchester in December, versus 826 in York and 789 in Canterbury.
