One in three University towns/cities now sees the average rent rise above the maximum students are prepared to pay for a room per month.
Research released yesterday by easyroommate found that student rents rose to £357 per month, a rise of 8.5% compared to last year which saw an average of £329 per month.
This rise of 8.5% is inconsistent with 2011 and 2012 which saw a rise of 5% year on year. This demand is due to a five year high for university applications. A 7.2% (433,330) rise in applications compared to last year which saw a 6.3% (404,000) drop.
The research also found that 54% of all students saw their rents rise over the last year.
