Hundreds of students arriving in Oxford have been shocked to find out they have nowhere to live. Around 400 students have received the news this week from Oxford Brookes University that rooms in university halls, which had been reserved for them for the coming academic year, were now no longer available.
Claire Urwin, co-owner of Martin & Co, the city centre's leading lettings specialist, said: “We have been inundated with calls from frantic students, and their parents, asking for help. We had already let all our student homes for this coming term some months ago, but my staff swung into action. They immediately started scouring the city for suitable properties which were still available and landlords were receiving calls from us well into the evening. One delighted landlord had his property let within two hours of speaking to us”.
Claire said: "Many of the students who had crowded into our offices on Friday were starting their first year at university in two weeks time and looked quite stunned by the turn of events".
