Landlords are ignoring gas safety, claims report

Landlords are ignoring gas safety, claims report

Shocking research published recently by Shelter and British Gas claims that as many as 1 in 10 landlords and letting agents are failing to carry out mandatory annual gas safety checks and certification in rental properties.

Bob Urwin, owner of Oxford letting agents Martin & Co, commented:  "It is quite unbelievable to think that some letting agents are failing both their landlord clients and tenants by not carrying out theses basic and absolutely crucial gas safety checks. Letting agents have a fundamental duty of care to tenants, and a clear legal requirement to have all gas appliances checked annually - and copies of certificates issued to tenants."

"Private landlords who fail to keep their appliances checked and certificated annually are breaking the law, and are strongly advised to engage a competent and regulated letting agent to ensure their obligations are met, every year, on time, without fail."

Details of the research were published on the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) website, and can be found here: www.arla.co.uk/news

If you are a landlord, and are not sure whether you have a valid gas safety certificate in place, you are strongly advised to immediately contact a Gas Safe registered engineer and arrange for them to visit and inspect all gas appliances in your rental properties as soon as possible.
