BikePark Wales has opened it’s doors just few days ago on 24th of August 2013. An ambitious project showcasing what is possible when enough people come together. The new facility aims to become world class centre for mountain biking with big plans to host national and international championships.
The opening of the fully featured centre (23 trails of varied difficulty, cafe and parking facility, bike renting and so on) is yet another prove that Merthyr Tydfil and the Valleys have so much to offer.
The centre is the first UK’s purpose built centre and is located just west of Merthyr Tydfil in the Gethin Woodland Park. Anna Walters of Abergavenny, one of the persons involved in the creation of the centre, said:
“There are very good road links from places like Birmingham, Bristol and the West Country and London and of course the rest of Wales. This will be the UK’s first ever large commercial mountain bike park. It is hoped that in the future it will bring up to 100,000 visitors a year and host international biking events.”
The project was part funded by EU funding, Welsh Government as well as number of private businesses. As you would expect, the Mayor of Merthyr Tydfil, Coun Graham Davies, was present during the launch event saying: “Tourism is now a very important factor in the future of Merthyr and the financial benefit cannot be underestimated.”
