The Equality and Human Rights Commission have launched an investigation into letting agents who are allegedly discriminating against black tenants. This is in line with a recent BBC programme which identified ten agents in the London area that showed discrimination on the grounds of race.
A spokesman for the Commission said: “It is against the law and totally wrong to discriminate against people on the basis of their ethnicity. We have received BBC Inside Out’s findings and will be talking to the property ombudsman and the trade bodies for estate agents to see what can be done urgently to stamp out these unacceptable practices.”
William Taylor, Director of Martin & Co Huddersfield (Letting Agent Huddersfield, Estate Agent Huddersfield, Property Management Huddersfield) said “this is obviously 100% unacceptable and something that we at Martin & Co would never consider doing. It is sad to think that members of our industry have such a cave man view on the world. This is just another reason why we should be moving towards full regulation of letting agents.”
