On Sunday 28th April nearly 900 cyclists lined up in Admirals Park, Chelmsford, to take part in this year’s 'Pedal for The J's' charity cycle ride, Sponsored by Martin & Co Chelmsford, raising over £34,000 for The J's Hospice.
The event, now in its fourth year, attracted cyclists from all over Essex and beyond. Under a clear blue sky and in near perfect conditions they set out on a choice of 15, 35 and 50 mile circular routes which took them through the outlaying villages and countryside north-east of Chelmsford and as far as Hatfield Heath.
The J’s would to say a big thank you to Martin & Co. who sponsored this year’s event. Steve Frost of Martin & Co, who with the team took part, completing the 35 mile route said “We feel it’s important to support and participate with organisations in our local community. “We chose The J’s Hospice as our charity of the year for a second year running because they are an amazing charity that is meeting a really desperate need. The team loved the idea of a charity bike ride, so it was the perfect fit for us to sponsor, we all had a great time and are very proud of our achievements in taking part. Individually we raised £1000 from friends, family, landlords and contractors.”
People of all ages took part in 'Pedal for The J's' including families, individuals, groups of friends as well as seasoned cyclists from local cycling clubs. The oldest being 83, while the youngest participant was 3 year old Mikolaj Dworaczynski who travelled the route in his cycle trailer pulled by his Dad Rafal.
On their return to Admirals Park many commented on the scenic nature of the ride, one saying "It was a lovely route, it took us through some beautiful Essex villages that I've never seen before", while another said "The route was great, Essex doesn’t have too many hills!"
Around half of all riders took on the 50 mile challenge, whilst the total miles of all three routes collectively completed by cyclists topped an incredible 36,000 miles!
Dominique Brunning, Fundraising Manager at The J's and event co-ordinator said "We were truly amazed by the number of people who signed up to take part in this year’s event. The enthusiastic spirit on the day echoes the passion that supporters feel for the work of The J's Hospice."
