Why rent?

Cost

It’s significantly cheaper in the shorter term to rent a property than it is to buy one. The outgoings you will save by renting include:

Solicitors’ fees on the purchase
Stamp duty on the purchase
Mortgage arrangement fees
Property repair and maintenance costs
Building insurance premiums
Service charges (if a leasehold flat)
Decoration costs.

And the costs you save when moving from a rented home can include:

Flexibility

Renting also makes it easier to move home if your needs should change in the future.

You are only “tied” to living at a particular property for the length of the tenancy. This is normally 6 or 12 months. Once the fixed term of the tenancy has expired you can simply give one months’ notice to quit.
Renting allows you to experiment with different styles of property such as flats, penthouses, barn conversions, cottages and the different lifestyles they present. You can try a city centre apartment for the night life while assessing if you could tolerate the noise and parking restrictions. A country cottage may be peaceful and idyllic but can you can be inconvenient if you rely on public transport. You can be outrageous and indulgent, because renting means not having to make any long term commitment.
Life changes, sometimes unexpectedly. Redundancy may mean moving to find work; a new relationship needs a base together, a family has to have space to grow. Renting can provide the flexibility to meet your changing circumstances.
