A new Government legislation introduced recently sees water companies in England and Wales take over many sewer pipes which previously have been under private ownership.
You may have been unaware that the connecting drain and sewer pipes which run underneath your garden, driveway and even nearby pavements and roads, had often been your responsibility, not the water company's.
This new legislation is designed to make things fairer for customers, by removing some of the burden of ownership from you, by putting more responsibility on water companies.
Here in the North West of England, we have taken an additional 32,200km of private sewer pipes - enough to stretch from Crewe to Carlisle 200 times.
The new legislation affects different types of property in different ways. You can find out more about how new rules apply to your home or business by using our "Explain-a-drain" tool or with our frequently asked questions.
More information is available from Water UK, the Government's water regulator Ofwat and the Consumer Council for Water.
