Landlords warned over copper theft

Landlords may wish to review their buy-to-let insurance policies following a police warning over copper theft from unoccupied properties.

 

Officers in Lincolnshire said there has been an increase in the number of incidents being reported across the county.

They confirmed that thieves have been breaking into buy-to-let properties and pulling out copper boilers and pipes to sell on.

 

Copper theft has become a high-profile crime in recent years, with railway operators and telecoms firms suffering major disruptions as a result.

 

However, increasingly criminals are targeting properties bearing 'to let' signs and taking advantage of void periods to break in and steal the metal.

Inspector Michelle McIlroy of Lincolnshire Police confirmed that more than ten houses in the West Lindsay area have been targeted by copper thieves in recent weeks.

She explained that the costs of repairing the damage after a central heating system has been ripped out are huge.

Landlords could therefore reduce the risk by investing in better security for their rental properties, she insisted.

"It is also important to check properties on a regular basis," Ms McIlroy added.
