Lewes is a market town, steeped in history, and renowned for its Bonfire Celebrations held annually on the 5th November, but also is a host to tourists all year around. During Saxon times a castle was built which still to this day dominates the town centre. The town was the site of the Battle of Lewes between the forces of Henry III and Simon de Monfort in the Second Barons’ War in 1264. Situated within the newly formed South Downs National Park, the surrounding countryside has many fantastic views and walks available.
The town centre itself benefits from many individual shops and boutiques which sets itself apart from other towns. The ‘Cliffe’ area has recently been pedestrianised which has resulted in quite a café style culture springing up. There are many parks dotted around the town which make this an ideal place for families to live, and with the excellent road and rail links to other major Sussex towns and indeed London, there are not many better places in the South East.
