The charming historic and thriving market town of Devizes lies at the very heart of Wiltshire, and still holds an active market every week. It still has a number of buildings that survive from the 16thC. During the Civil War the town was the centre for the nearby Battle of Roundway Down. The ancient castle was subsequently demolished by Cromwell, but was rebuilt in Victorian times as an imposing residence.

 

The town prospered in Georgian times when many of its finest buildings were erected. Today Devizes can boast nearly 500 listed buildings, probably the highest concentration anywhere in England.

The Kennet & Avon Canal runs through the Town, and the spectacular Caen Hill flight of 29 locks leading up to Devizes was a major engineering feat when built at the end of the 18thC, and is still a tourist attraction.

 

The surrounding countryside offers stately homes, picturesque villages, great pubs, attractive waterways and fantastic walking and cycling in stunning scenery and the like of Stonehenge on your doorstep.

Devizes lies about twenty miles south of Junctions 17 and 16 of the M4, The train station in Chippenham is only 12 miles away, and offers mainline commuter rail services into London Paddington.
