Those who have invested in property to let in Bournemouth could soon be given advice on how to improve the standard of the accommodation they offer by the local council.
Bournemouth Council is launching a new drive to raise the quality of privately rented properties on offer in the Boscombe region of the city.
It will see the council’s Environmental Health Service contacting home owners and landlords to arrange inspections in central Boscombe over the next few months.
The inspectors will work with landlords of all rented accommodation to assess whether improvements can or should be made to properties and where necessary, set a timeframe for upgrades to be carried out.
Council officers will offer guidance on useful services for landlords to help with improving property security and accessing grants for insulation to increase energy efficiency.
"We very much want to work in partnership with local landlords to help raise the standards of living conditions for Boscombe residents, in particular those living in Central Boscombe," explained councillor Robert Lawton, cabinet member for housing and environment.
"We will be advising landlords about providing their tenants with adequate heating, access to amenities, ensuring the property is well maintained and complies with fire regulations."
Central Boscombe, which is home to around 1,300 privately-rented properties, was targeted for the initiative following the findings of the Bournemouth 2026 Boscombe Area
Assessment, which confirmed that the region is the most deprived area in Bournemouth.
Steve Wells, of local landlord Dave Wells Properties, said he was pleased the council has launched the initiative.
"We are well aware of these inspections, which are part of Bournemouth council’s work to regenerate Boscombe and improve standards," he told the Daily Echo.
"We've had dialogue with Bournemouth council already and this is an initiative that we welcome as we are continually investing in and improving our properties."
