Consider renting out your home when taking a gap year

26th July 2011

Those taking some time off work to travel have been advised to consider renting out their properties while away to generate extra income.

According to moneysupermarket.com, rather than being exclusive to students, gap years are often taken by older people looking to take a break from their careers to go off and see the world.

However, before going away, there are a number of things people can do to protect their finances while they are gone, including renting out their homes.

Those that take this option may want to look into property management services to help them do this.

"For those away for a long time, consider renting out your home for an additional income, and this can be done through a management company or family member who can look after everything," it said.

"Ensure you have set up arrangements for bills to be paid and that you have access to your accounts via the internet when you travel."

Meanwhile, there are a number of other things travellers need to take into consideration before leaving, the comparison website advised.

For example, they should look into the charges and security services offered by their credit and debit card provider for use abroad.

They should also make sure they have adequate travel insurance and, if travelling in Europe, a European Health Insurance Card.

Bob Atkinson, travel expert at moneysupermarket.com said: "It's not just school and university leavers who may be thinking about a gap year this summer. With more adults taking time out to travel and explore the wider world on a well-earned career break, or opting for a longer, more intrepid getaway, it's vital that all those intending to make the trip consider all aspects of the gap year before they go.

"Planning really is the key when it comes to gap year finances and having the right products in your wallets can really save a packet, allowing you to make the most of the adventures while keeping covered."
