Those who have properties listed with residential lettings agents may be interested a new service being offered by chartered surveyor e.surv.
The company has announced the launch of PropertyCare Plus, an annual inspection service aimed at elderly or vulnerable residents.
Checks will include inspection of the fabric of the building as well as key household appliances such as boilers.
The service will notify the property owner of any repairs that need immediate attention, areas that may cause future issues and provides advice on routine maintenance.
Landlords can use the service to check the condition of a property they may not have visited for a while, said e.surve, rather than relying on tenants to notify them of defects.
PropertyCare Plus will also allow buy-to-let property owners to develop cyclical maintenance plans, spreading maintenance costs throughout the lifecycle of ownership of the building, rather than responding to problems as they arise.
"General wear and tear, and changeable weather can turn into serious issues for your home - and your wallet. But, if you catch them in time you can easily stop costs spiralling out of control," said Richard Sexton, director of e.surv .
“PropertyCare Plus is a professional inspection that gives you a detailed picture of the condition of your house, expert advice on solving any current problems and helpful guidance on maintaining a healthy house for your future."
Having your property inspected to make sure it is in good condition may be particularly wise during the winter months when severe weather can potentially exacerbate any problems.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors recently urged property owners to ensure that they take proactive measures to protect their buildings from winter weather damage by actions such as making sure water is turned off at the mains to prevent frozen pipes from bursting and keeping heating on a low temperature when the house is unoccupied.
