Landlords to take advantage of new boiler scrappage scheme?

02nd June 2011

Owners of buy-to-let properties could find they are more easily able to attract tenants if they take advantage of a new boiler scrappage scheme.

The new programme has been launched by British Gas and is similar to the government initiative that ended last year.

It will enable landlords and other homeowners to receive £400 towards the cost of a new energy efficient boiler from Worcester Bosch.

This could help landlords improve their properties by making them more eco-friendly and energy efficient, leading to lower energy bills for tenants.

Tom Lyon, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Inefficient boilers contribute significantly to household carbon emissions. In addition, installing a modern energy efficient boiler can save households up to £225 a year on heating bills.

"Heating and hot water accounts for around 60 per cent of the average household energy bill, which means people can expect to pay £679 a year on these alone. And with energy prices likely to increase, it makes absolute sense to focus energy efficiency efforts here where people have the most to gain."

You do not have to be a British Gas customer to apply for the offer and, unlike the government scheme, there is no cap on the number of boilers it will cover, meaning anyone who sends their application before June 30th is eligible.

Mr Lyon reminded those interested in the scheme to make sure they always use a Gas Safe registered plumber to carry out the installation of a new boiler.
